I am a New Zealand painter based in Japan, I grew up in Auckland and studied graphic design at the Auckland University of Technology.From an early age, I was inspired by images of the Cyclops devouring the crew of Odysseus, Gawain beheading the Green Knight, and then of religious martyrs broken, burned, flayed — the eyeballs of saints on platters.
My imagination was twisted further by a febrile mix of fantasy, horror, science fiction and comics, and Caravaggio, Bosch, Titian, van Eyck and others, expanded and refined my aesthetic development.
Although my works may seem fantastical, in that they appear to depict the unreal, I do not see them as such. Instead, I seek to reveal the horror that eludes the perception of the healthy and well-adjusted. There are real things lurking at the periphery —just beyond the horizon, briefly visible at the moment of awakening, in awkward silences, in failure and despondency.
My work draws upon the folly of hope, the futility of struggle against chaos, the inevitability of decay and death.
